These wonderful pictures from reader Russell Poe are of a rare but beautiful phenomenon…it is caused when a jet passes through a deck of altocumulus or cirrocumulus clouds. The exhaust from the plane can cause the supercooled water droplets of the clouds to precipitate out, creating a “hole” in the clouds.
Alien spacecraft to our north! Or maybe it’s just a hole punch cloud…
I took these pictures around 2pm in Blount County. I wish that the formation had come directly over us, but it was quite a bit to the north.
This is the most interesting cloud formation to me – lenticular clouds would be next down the line.
Hope everyone had a great weekend!
