RADAR CHECK: A cluster of strong thunderstorms is parked over Northeast Alabama this afternoon. Heavy rain is falling over parts of Etowah, DeKalb, Cherokee, Calhoun, Cleburne, and Randolph counties… the storms are drifting slowly to the south. Some small hail was reported in East Gadsden.
Otherwise, this has been a hot, hazy, humid day across Alabama with temperatures generally in the 86-90 degree range. The storms over Northeast Alabama will slowly fade away tonight.
TOMORROW THROUGH THE WEEKEND: We are getting settled into a fairly typical summer pattern in coming days. Each day we expect a mix of sun and clouds, and we will have random, scattered showers and thunderstorms around, mainly during the afternoon and evening hours. Odds of any one spot getting wet tomorrow and Friday will be in the 30 percent range, and around 40 percent over the weekend. No way of knowing in advance exactly when and where these storms pop up. If you have something planned outdoors, you just have to watch radar trends. Afternoon highs will be generally between 89 and 92 degrees.
NEXT WEEK: We will roll with a persistence forecast. Partly sunny, hot, humid days with the chance of a passing shower or thunderstorm daily in scattered spots. Most of the storms will come from 2:00 until 10:00 p.m… but you can’t rule out a late night or morning stray shower. Afternoon highs will be mostly in the low 90s, lows in the low 70s. Very much what you expect during the first week of July in Alabama. See the Weather Xtreme video for maps, graphics, and more details.
TROPICS: All remains very quiet across the Atlantic basin, and tropical storm formation is not expected through next week.
ON THIS DATE IN 1986: Hurricane Bonnie made landfall on the upper Texas coast. A wind gust to 98 mph occurred at Sea Rim State Park. Ace, Texas recorded a total of 13 inches of rain.
