1954 was widely considered as the worst (or at least one of the very worst) drought years in Alabama.
But I want to mention a three-year period when drought was not even thought about.
Look at these rain totals from Evergreen, in South Alabama for the three-year period 1973-1975:
81.84 inches in 1973
78.12 inches in 1974
114.02 inches in 1975
That is a whopping 273.98 inches in three years.
The 114.02 inches at Evergreen in 1975 is an all time record for the state of Alabama. Previous record was 106.57 inches at Mount Vernon Barracks, Mobile County, in 1853.
(For comparision, the normal annual rain total for Birmingham is around 54 inches)
