For most of us, it is good news to see that the weather will be warming up. It is fairly unusual for Central Alabama to see temperatures this cold for so many days. One of the nicest things about living in the Southeast US is that cold does not usually last very long. But since the first of January we have been in a deep freeze with a protracted period of cold weather. So here are a couple of observations on the cold that is finally beginning to lessen its grip on us.

10 – the number of days since we’ve seen 50+ highs in Central Alabama (54 on December 31st).

26 – the coldest high in Birmingham so far this year on January 8th.

14 – the coldest low in Birmingham so far this year on January 5th.

10 – number of consecutive days with lows below freezing (so far).

50 – number of days since 1900 in which the high was 26 degrees or lower.

52 – the 30-year average high for January 10th.

32 – the 30-year average low for January 10th.

35 – the actual average high for the first 9 days of January, 2010.

19 – the actual average low for the first 9 days of January, 2010.

a large number – number of broken pipes in Central Alabama!

6 – the number of days until the next good chance of rain.
