The Sunday edition of the Weather Xtreme video is available in the player below, and on iTunes:
Good cold air advection underway today, so don’t expect temperatures to climb very much. If you should find yourself in some sunny areas today – and those are most likely south of Interstate 20 – you might reach the lower 50s. But for most of us, the temperature will struggle to reach the upper 40s. By this evening, the 540 thickness contour should be passing Birmingham on its way to the Gulf Coast right along with the zero-degree isotherm at 850 millibars.
Plus we’ve got a very deep trough that will evolve into a deep cut-off low just off the coast of Georgia and Northeast Florida. That low is actually going to stick around for a couple of days before edging eastward and beginning to weaken or fill. The accompanying surface low is forecast to bring up to 10 inches to the eastern and coastal sections of North Carolina. Speaking of rain, I just had to check out Seattle’s climate data again today. They must have had a pretty good day yesterday with only a trace of rain. However, their rainfall total so far this month still stand over 11 inches, over 8 inches above the normal value for November. Wet place, and really wet this year.
We, on the other hand, are NOT wet. And it looks like we are going to stay dry for the upcoming week. In fact, the next really good shot at rain is not expected until the middle of the next week. A trough approaching by Sunday of next weekend could bring some shower chances by late Sunday and Monday.
The next two days will be rather chilly with morning lows Tuesday morning dropping into the 25 to 30 degree range for much of the area. But as is fairly typical for Central Alabama, we will warm up nicely by Thanksgiving with afternoon highs flirting with 70 degrees. And the current forecast calls for a mix of sun and clouds plus mild temperatures as we kick-off the shopping season the day after Turkey Day.
In the longer range, the GFS is forecasting a rather wet end to November with another strong system and some widespread rain around the 29th. By the end of the GFS model run or early December, the pattern is forecast to look a lot like it does for the start of this week with a strong cut-off low just off the coast of Georgia.
James Spann will be back here tomorrow morning with the next Weather Xtreme Video. As for me, I’m headed out for Thanksgiving to visit family. I hope everyone has a wonderful Thanksgiving. God bless.
