That title is an exaggeration, of course. Alabama is nowhere near being a desert but it feels that way sometimes.
We do need rain.
We need it badly.
Teasing someone at church Sunday who was begging for rain. Told him, we were now charging $300 an inch for rain and that we did not accept credit cards. . He said, if we could deliver, he would be willing to pay.
These rain amounts are not how much we have received this year so far. Instead, it is a list of how we have been short-changed:
10.25 inches below normal in Muscle Shoals
11.41 at Huntsville
9.82 at Anniston
10.27 at Birmingham Airport
12.34 at Tuscaloosa
7.46 at Montgomery
9.16 at Mobile
Tuscaloosa has only received 6.48 inches of rain since you said, “Happy New Year.” That is an average of only about 1.85 inches per month or at the rate of only about 23 inches a year. Normal is about 54 inches.
So that won’t cut it in a state known for greenery, flowers, great crops. Of course, we will not end the year with only 23 inches.
Even the kudzu is getting thirsty.
Not to mention my yard.
