RADAR CHECK: A large mass of rain, including a few thunderstorms, is over the southern half of Alabama this afternoon. To the north, the sky is mostly sunny near the Tennessee state line. Temperatures are in the 60s and 70s.

Rain across South Alabama will end tonight, but another batch of rain will move into the state after midnight. Like the activity this afternoon, most of the rain tomorrow morning will stay over the southern half of the state. Most of Alabama will be dry tomorrow afternoon/tomorrow night, but a few isolated showers are possible. Highest chance of showers tomorrow evening is over Mobile and Baldwin counties.

SUNDAY: SPC has introduced a “marginal risk” (level 1/5) of severe thunderstorms for all of Alabama late Sunday and Sunday night.

A decent part of the day Sunday will be dry, and if the sun can break out temperatures will reach the low 80s, and the air will become unstable. Thunderstorms that form late Sunday afternoon and Sunday night could produce strong, gusty winds and some hail. Wind profiles do not support tornadoes, however.

NEXT WEEK:A cold front will push through Monday; rain remains possible mainly during the morning hours. The rest of the week looks generally dry with just a small risk of a shower over North Alabama Wednesday. As an upper ridge builds over the latter half of the week afternoons turn warmer… we will be in the upper 80s by the following weekend (May 16-17). See the video briefing for maps, graphics, and more details.

ON THIS DATE IN 1981: Dallas/Fort Worth was hit by their worst hailstorm ever, as baseball to grapefruit sized hail and 100 mph winds caused $200 million in damages. The hail actually accumulated 8 inches deep in Cedar Hill, TX.

ON THIS DATE IN 1973: An F2 tornado moved through parts of Marshall and DeKalb counties, killing two people near Geraldine. The same day another F2 tornado tore through parts of Bankhead National Forest, causing major timber damage.

Look for my next video briefing here by 6:00 a.m. Monday… enjoy the weekend!
