That solid yellow line that extends from near Columbus MS to just northeast of Tuscaloosa to Clanton to Alexander City is the freezing line at the surface right now. North of that, temperatures are at 32F or below and precipitation that has either fallen or in falling is causing icing on roadways and exposed surfaces.
The icing is worst on bridges and overpasses. There have been numerous automobile accidents, including some with injuries and even fatalities. I-59 is closed northeast of Birmingham near exit 150 because of a major accident.
I have a report that I-459 south is now closed at I-20 because of a multiple vehicle accident. So it is dangerous in many areas.
Mike Clemmer sent this really cool link to a NAVTEQ real time traffic flow map for Birmingham. It could be helpful in your planning this afternoon.
South of that freezing line, conditions are beginning to improve, although there still will be some icing especially on bridges over East Alabama mainly. Ice is beginning to melt in the Tuscaloosa area and roads have improved.
Conditions should slowly improve from the southwest, but the Birmingham area will experience more icing from the light precipitation that is now moving into the metro.
Areas of East and Northeast Alabama will continue to see problems through the afternoon. Higher elevation locations could see icing throughout the afternoon and into the evening.
Monitor conditions before traveling across Central Alabama this afternoon. Check road conditions and temperatures. Be especially careful on bridges and overpasses. Allow plenty of time and SLOW DOWN. Take it easy out there.
JB will be keeping you updated all afternoon with frequent reports. Thanks to all the Skywatchers for great reports today.
