Well, now that all the hub-bub about the weather is behind us, we can get on to some really important topics – like food!
As JB alluded to in the rainfall summary post, I was in Orange Beach, AL, for the big event up here, but we did actually have a pretty big event down there. We had rain nearly all day Thursday and through much of the morning today. Doppler radar estimates indicated 8 to 15 inches, some of the heavier amounts offshore so no way to know for sure. Driving around today and as I left the area, ditches and low spots were chuck full of water. I think an all day rain is pretty uncommon at the beach, but I have to admit that I absolutely cannot recall the last time we had an all day rain in Central Alabama.
Rain or no rain at the beach, you have got to eat. My wife and I were with some friends from our church, Joe and Janet Eversole. Joe worked with a man who has opened a restaurant on Perdido Key, FL, Steve Westendorf, and the restaurant is the Sunset Grille at Holiday Harbor Marina. We actually ate two meals there and the seafood gumbo was scrumptious – I think it is quite unique so it ought to have a really special name like seafood chili or something else exotic. It’s casual dining at a spot right on the intracoastal waterway. I’ve got a couple of pictures of the place below.
We just missed sunset the first night and it was raining madly the second, but Steve has a couple of pictures of sunsets taken from the restaurant on the walls. Sunset can be really beautiful there because just west of the restaurant is a small island with a nice stand of trees which makes a great way to view the sun going down. I hope to get back there soon to take in another bowl of the gumbo plus a sunset or two.
