WARMEST SO FAR: What a delightful afternoon…. Tuscaloosa has reached the low 60s, with mid to upper 50s in most other places. The warm-up continues tomorrow, and it now looks like we will see a high in the 65-69 degree range, making it the warmest day so far this year. A few spots over in West Alabama could very well touch the 70 degree mark. The air stays dry and we expect a good supply of winter sunshine tomorrow.

SUNDAY/MONDAY: Clouds return, and we will bring in the chance of a little light rain at times on both days. The weather stays mild with a high in the mid 60s. The rain won’t be continuous, and the sun should peek out at times.

TUESDAY/WEDNESDAY: Watch the Weather Xtreme video and you will see the GFS and the ECMWF are converging on a solution that could very well bring the risk of strong to severe thunderstorms to our state late Tuesday and Tuesday night. The GFS shows a deep surface low near Memphis Tuesday night (1004 mb), while the ECMWF has that low more to the north over southern Illinois. This clearly puts all of Alabama in the warm sector, and if adequate instability can develop, we will have some risk of severe convection. The greatest risk of strong storms seems to be from about 4:00 p.m. Tuesday until 4:00 a.m. Wednesday.

In addition, to the threat of strong storms, heavy rain is likely, with amounts of 1-2 inches for much of Alabama.

Colder air begins to move in after the storms, and Wednesday could be a day with temperatures falling into the 40s with a cool northwest wind.

THURSDAY/FRIDAY: These two days will be cold and dry; highs most likely will be in the 40s with lows in the 20s. The coldest air will remain north of Alabama, but it will be a sharp change compared to the mild weather we will enjoy through Tuesday.

LONG RANGE: The GFS still looks cold and unsettled into mid-February… see the Weather Xtreme video for the details.

WEATHER BRAINS: Don’t forget you can listen to our weekly 30 minute netcast anytime on the web, or on iTunes. This is the show all about weather featuring many familiar voices, including our meteorologists here at ABC 33/40.
