Okay, it’s all too late for Halloween, 2007, but it was so cool, I just had to make a post about it. The “it” I’m speaking of is the Haunted Chicken House at Hollis Crossroads. Hollis Crossroads is located at the intersection of US 431 and SR 9 about 8 miles south of I-20. The Haunted Chicken House is just that – an old chicken house. But it has been cleaned up and gutted with 300 feet of marvelous Halloween haunting.

I traveled over there last night to go through it and it was amazing. The Haunted Chicken House is sponsored by the Hollis Crossroads Volunteer Fire Department to raise funds. And raise funds they do – over $50,000 last year and maybe more than that this year. And the reason they raise so much money is because they have one of the best haunted houses in all of the Southeast US. I understand that they have been rated in the top three for several years.

There are lots of scary moments as you wind your way the whole length – nearly 300 feet – of the old chicken house. I was by myself, so I tagged along with four other folks. We quickly became very good friends as we groped our way through various scary scenes including a maze in near total darkness. But you are completely safe because there are “actors” who scare you but also give you some gentle hints so you can find your way through.

Mike and Dan at the Fire Department invited me over, and I don’t usually do that sort of thing, but it was great fun. So mark your calendar for next year. They start on October 1 usually, and run the chicken house Thursday through Saturday nights and then open every night right before Halloween. They open around 7 pm.

They’ve even added a haunted hayride which looked like fun from the screaming I heard off in the distance. Check out their web site, too, at www.hauntedchickenhouse.com.
