THIS AFTERNOON: Birmingham is at 60 degrees at 2:00… 11 degrees warmer that yesterday, but still 11 degrees below the average high of 71 for April 1. At least we are moving in the right direction. It is much warmer to the south, where Montgomery is reporting 72. The sky is still mostly cloudy over much of North Alabama, but the radars have gone quiet, and we should be dry through the weekend.

WARMER DAYS AHEAD: The weekend still looks delightful, with a good supply of sunshine and warmer afternoons. We reach the low 70s tomorrow, and by Sunday afternoon many communities will touch the 80 degree mark.

SEVERE WEATHER EARLY NEXT WEEK: Watch the Weather Xtreme video for all of the details… but the 12Z model runs are a little faster with our next system, suggesting the main window for severe weather coming from 8:00 p.m. Monday through 3:00 a.m. Tuesday. And, both models are showing the primary surface low well to the north, northeast of Detroit, meaning the primary threat will come from a QLCS and damaging straight line winds. There is enough shear for a few isolated tornadoes, especially in discreet cells that can break out ahead of the main line. But, with the lack of really backed surface winds and lower helicity values, it sure looks like the main threat will come from straight line winds as opposed to a rash of tornadoes.

The rain will be heavy, and amounts of one to two inches are likely. The latest guidance suggests all of the storms will be out of Alabama by daybreak Tuesday, although clouds will probably linger much of the day as colder air blows in. The high will drop from the mid 80s Monday to the upper 50s Tuesday. We will have a much better idea of the mesoscale features of this system over the weekend.

REST OF NEXT WEEK: Still looks like some scattered light frost is possible early Wednesday, but for now we are not expecting a widespread, killing freeze thankfully. The rest of the week will be dry with mild afternoons and cool nights. Again, see the Weather Xtreme video for more long range ideas and thoughts.

I had a great time today visiting with the kids at Elvin Hill Elementary in Columbiana, and Noah’s Park Pre-School in Alabaster. Be looking for them on the Pepsi KIDCAM on ABC 33/40 News at 5:00 and 6:00 this evening. Brian Peters, the internationally beloved meteorologist, will have the video updates tomorrow and Sunday… my next one will be posted bright and early Monday morning. Enjoy the weekend!
