REFRESHING RAIN: This has turned out to be a wonderful rain event for Alabama. As suspected, the morning mass of storms helped to stabilize the air across Alabama, making for only a minimal severe weather situation for the past few hours. In fact, the severe weather threat is pretty much over for the northern half of Alabama as rain-cooler, stable air covers this part of the state.
Some quick rain totals include 1.66″ at Haleyville, 0.88″ at Northport, and 0.76″ at Coker. The rain was heaviest over Marion, Franklin, Colbert, and Lauderdale Counties of Northwest Alabama; one of our Skywatchers in Hamilton reported over four inches of rain with considerable flooding at one point. Most places are in the 70s, although it was only 67 at Haleyville and 69 at Huntsville at 2:00. Not bad for a late June day in Alabama.
REST OF THE WEEK: Drier air moves into North Alabama tonight, and we are still looking at sunny days and fair nights tomorrow through Friday. No cool air; highs will be in the mid 90s, but the humidity will be lower than usual for summer. Any showers or storms should be confined to the southern half of Alabama, and even down there they should be widely spaced.
FOURTH OF JULY WEEKEND: We might see a few afternoon shower or storms Saturday and Sunday, but they should be pretty isolated as the upper ridge persists. Look for a decent amount of sun with a high in the mid 90s. A few upper 90s could show up over West Alabama. Showers and storms should increase a bit Monday as the ridge weakens slightly, but they still will be scattered, and mostly over by fireworks time around 9:00 p.m.
TROPICAL WEATHER: A tropical in the Bay of Campeche has a high chance of becoming a tropical depression within the next 24 hours. A hurricane hunter could not find a closed circulation this afternoon, but there is pretty good chance it will be upgraded to at least a depression before moving into the Mexican Gulf Coast Thursday. An outside chance it becomes Tropical Storm Arlene. The main impact will be heavy rain for North Mexico.
BEACH WEATHER: Tomorrow seems to be the day with the best coverage of showers on the Central Gulf Coast, with scattered to numerous showers and storms from Panama City west to Gulf Shores with about 2-4 hours of sun. Then, Thursday through Monday, expect 7 to 9 hours of sunshine each day with just a few scattered storms around. Highs tomorrow will be in the 80s, then close to 90 for the rest of the week and the weekend. The sea water temperature at the Dauphin Island Sea Lab this afternoon is 88 degrees.
