A quick post on some stuff from the 88th Annual Meeting of the American Meteorological Soceity in New Orleans. I’ve been to several AMS-sponsored conferences, but I had never been to one of these. It was good to see some people I’ve met at other conferences in the past from all over the country, and to meet some neat new people as well.
I had the opportunity to hear Max Mayfield, former director of the National Hurricane Center, and probably one of the most famous and respected meteorologists in America, after his calm interviews during storms like Ivan and Katrina. I also briefly met Dr. William Gray of Colorado State University, who has been issuing forecasts for hurricane seasons for many years. He really has a great sense of humor.
My presentation went OK. However, I was afraid that the sound of the NOAA weather radio alert tones and the old tornado siren would not be heard at all. Instead, they had a really good sound system…so good that some people in Tennessee may have heard it.
A few pictures are attached.
