I have always considered our regular blog readers part of a family. Many of you have been with us going way back to the early days of the Internet, and of course, many of you have been watching on TV for a while. Some even go back to 1978 when I started on TV here in Alabama.
The April 27 tornado outbreak has shaken many of us that are weather professionals. To see that loss of life on our watch was surreal. Despite seemingly good warnings, over 240 people in our state died. Research is underway now to determine why the loss of life was so high, and we commit to improve the warning process as a result of the findings.
I find my greatest therapy after a horrible tornado tragedy is to help a family in need. And I would like to extend an offer for you to join me in this ministry.
THE WEEKEND AFTER THE TORNADO OUTBREAK: I went to Walker County with a group of men, mostly dads and coaches from my son’s baseball team, looking for opportunities to help.
We came across the Adams family. Mom, dad, and 9 kids. All eleven survived the two tornadoes that impacted their neighborhood near Cordova in a small underground tornado shelter. The second tornado pushed trees through their mobile home, which was shredded. We found the family living in a small AirStream trailer on their property, which you can imagine was a nightmare for a huge family like this.
Initially, I worked with ABC to see if they had an interest in Extreme Home Makeover making a miracle here. The video below was the one sent to the producers…
ABC isn’t able to move fast enough for this family, so we have stepped in, and now I am asking you to join me in getting this family into a home.
WHERE WE ARE NOW: We have found a wonderful contractor in Jasper who is donating his time and talent to oversee the project, and the foundation is complete on the new home.
WHAT WE NEED: Materials and workers. Here is a list of some of the material needed in coming weeks…
Metal Roof, trusses, sheetrock, insulation, windows, porch framing, doors, vinyl siding, HVAC, electrical and plumbing, cabinets, paint, tile, and flooring.
HOW YOU CAN HELP: Spread the word. Your church, business, family can get involved to make this special miracle happen for some of our neighbors in need.
WHO TO CONTACT: Lori Abercrombie with the Mission of Hope in Dora is coordinating donations. You can contact Lori via email: [email protected]
I will be at the construction site often in coming weeks and will keep you updated on the progress. Please consider getting involved… we make this work, and we can help others who are still in need after April 27. Thanks in advance for your help!
