WARMER AFTERNOONS: We are looking at a day and warmer weather pattern for Alabama for the next five days as temperatures return to average values for September. Look for a high in the low 80s today, followed by mid 80s over the weekend with a good supply of sunshine each day. Nights will remain pleasant.

FOOTBALL WEATHER: The Alabama Crimson Tide heads up to State College, Pa. tomorrow, and it looks like a partly sunny set-up with a chance of a few stray showers or storms. The State College has been inundated with flood producing rains over the last several days, thanks to the remnants of Lee which gave us our big flood. Yesterday one person was trapped in his car in high water and was drowned before he could be rescued. Also in Lancaster County, near the community of White Oak, a man was walking in 1.5 feet of water and he was swept away and drowned. With floodwaters expected to cover Routes 22/322 in Dauphin County, PA, travelers who use that route are advised to find an alternate way to the game. The kickoff temperature (2:30 p.m. CDT) will be near 74 degrees, falling to near 70 by the end of the game.

Auburn will host Mississippi State (kickoff shortly before 11:30); the sky should be mostly sunny with temperatures rising from near 78 at kickoff into the low 80s by the fourth quarter. And, UAB opens their season at Florida tomorrow evening (6:00 CDT kickoff) in Gainesville. A brief shower or storm is possible during the game; the kickoff temperature will be in the mid 80s, falling to near 80 by the final whistle.

For the high school games across Alabama tonight, the sky should be mostly fair with temperatures falling through the 70s during the games.

NEXT WEEK: Now that we have clarity on Nate (not bothering us), the week starts warm and dry with upper 80s. A cold front is due in here late in the week with some risk of showers, followed by a nice surge of cool, continental air the following weekend. See the Weather Xtreme video for more details.

TROPICS: Hurricane Katia is racing northeast toward the North Atlantic this morning and is no threat to land. Tropical Storm Maria is still disorganized, but is expected to become a hurricane over the weekend as it passes east of the Bahamas. Long range guidance is in good agreement; showing Maria taking a track similar to Katia with recurvature east of the U.S.

After the dropdonde data from NOAA research aircraft was added to model input, the 00Z runs last night showed a clear turn to the west for Tropical Storm Nate in the far Southwest Gulf of Mexico, with landfall in Mexico well south of Brownsville, Texas. NHC has adjusted their track accordingly, and the idea of a northward motion toward the Central Gulf Coast is off the table. Unfortunately it looks like Nate won’t help the Texas drought situation. Again, see the Weather Xtreme video for details.
