FALL IS IN THE AIR: We must remind you that this is still technically summer, as autumn officially arrives (in terms of astronomy) on September 23 at 4:04 a.m. CDT. But it sure feels like fall with temperatures in the 40s in a few spots across North Alabama. Here are some 5:00 a.m. observations that will make fall weather fans smile…

Cullman 48
Fayette 49
Haleyville 49
Black Creek (northeast of Gadsden) 49
Coker 51
Center Point 51
Birmingham 53
Tuscaloosa 54
Anniston 56

Forecasting cloud cover today will be tricky; low clouds could move into East Alabama thanks to a moist easterly flow, and high clouds could arrive in West Alabama. Bottom line is that we will forecast a mix of sun and clouds today with a high in the 70s. Low humidity and a fresh north breeze. Just a wonderful day after a long, hot summer.

THE WEEKEND: The weather warms slowly; we will be close to 80 tomorrow, followed by low to mid 80s Sunday with partly sunny sky both days.

FOOTBALL WEATHER: For the high school games tonight, the sky should be mostly fair, with temperatures in the low 70s at kickoff, falling into the 60s by the second half.

Alabama will host North Texas tomorrow night in Tuscaloosa (6:30 p.m. kickoff)… the sky will be mostly fair with a kickoff temperature near 78 degrees. Temperatures will drop into the 60s by the fourth quarter with a light north breeze. Auburn is on the road; they will be at Clemson Saturday for a game that kicks off at 11:00 CDT (on ABC 33/40 TV). The sky will be mostly cloudy with some light rain or drizzle possible during the game. The temperature will rise from near 64 at kickoff into the upper 60s by the final whistle. UAB will host Tulane at Legion Field Saturday at 3:00 p.m… the sky will be partly sunny at kickoff with a temperature in the upper 70s, falling to near 70 by the end of the game. No significant chance of rain.

NEXT WEEK: We could see enough moisture for a few scattered showers Tuesday and Wednesday. The 00Z GFS shows a cold front rolling through on Thursday with a chance of showers and storms, followed by cooler and drier air one week from today. See the Weather Xtreme video for more long range ideas.

TROPICS: Very quiet across the Atlantic basin. Hurricane Maria will clip the coast of Newfoundland later today, and then become post-tropical over the North Atlantic tomorrow.
