RAW DAY: A strong short wave will bring periods of rain to Alabama today in very cool air that followed the passage of a cold front late yesterday. Temperatures will hold in the 50s all day with a cool north breeze. The 00Z NAM is printing 0.27″ for Birmingham, while the GFS is very similar with 0.21″. Most of the rain should be east of here by 7:00 p.m., and the sky clears late tonight.

BRIGHTER WEEKEND: Look for some deluxe weather over the weekend, with sunny cool days and clear, cold nights. Highs will be in the 60s, lows in the 30s. We should see some frost early Sunday with lows in the mid 30s, with potential for a freeze for the colder spots across North and Central Alabama.

FOOTBALL WEATHER: A little light rain could linger over East Alabama this evening during the first half of some of the high school games, but the bulk of the rain should be over by the time the games kick off. It will be brisk, with temperatures falling from the mid 50s at kickoff into the 40s by the final whistle.

The annual Magic City Classic is tomorrow at Birmingham’s Legion Field. The sky will be sunny with temperatures generally in the 60s during the game. Auburn hosts Ole Miss tomorrow evening at 6:00 p.m. CDT at Jordan-Hare Stadium. The sky will be clear, with temperatures falling from near 60 at kickoff into the upper 40s by the final whistle. UAB is on the road; they play Marshall University at Huntingdon, West Virginia tomorrow morning at 11:00 a.m. CDT. The sky will be sunny, with temperatures rising from near 50 at kickoff into the mid 50s by the fourth quarter.

NEXT WEEK: The weather stays dry Monday through Wednesday… some model madness concerning the end of the week. Both the GFS and the ECMWF now bring a strong upper wave trough and cold front through during the latter half of the week, but there is lots of variation in the amount of available moisture and the timing. We will mention some risk of a shower Thursday or Friday… we will have to fine tune the forecast in coming days. For now it doesn’t look like a big rain event, or one that would bring a severe weather risk. See the Weather Xtreme video for details.

TROPICS: Rina is now a disorganized tropical storm on the northern coast of the Yucatan Peninsula near Cancun… it will be forced to the south in coming days back down into the Caribbean, and will struggle to survive due to strong winds aloft. The rest of the Atlantic basin is relatively quiet.

LONG RANGE: The 00Z GFS shows a severe weather look for Alabama on November 12, but this is pure voodoo at this point. But, just a reminder the fall tornado season kicks off next week and it is the time of the year to watch for that. See the details on the Weather Xtreme video.
