CLOUDY, COOL DAY: As expected, rain amounts across Alabama have been light and spotty today, and already the bulk of the light rain is out of the state, into Georgia. There could be some lingering drizzle in spots this evening, but the sky will clear late tonight as dry air takes over, and a deepening surface low pulls away to the northeast.

We should mention that low will bring a major late October snow storm to parts of the Northeast U.S. over the next 36 hours… welcome to winter very early!

OUR WEEKEND: Sunny cool days, clear cold nights. Highs in the 60s, lows in the 30s. We should see mid 30s for most places early Sunday with frost likely, and a freeze for the normally colder spots.

FOOTBALL WEATHER: Generally dry and cool for tonight’s high school games. Maybe a little drizzle in spots over East Alabama, but not much. It will be brisk, with temperatures falling from the mid 50s at kickoff into the 40s by the final whistle.

The annual Magic City Classic is tomorrow at Birmingham’s Legion Field. The sky will be sunny with temperatures generally in the 60s during the game. Auburn hosts Ole Miss tomorrow evening at 6:00 p.m. CDT at Jordan-Hare Stadium. The sky will be clear, with temperatures falling from near 60 at kickoff into the upper 40s by the final whistle. UAB is on the road; they play Marshall University at Huntingdon, West Virginia tomorrow morning at 11:00 a.m. CDT. The sky will be sunny, with temperatures rising from near 50 at kickoff into the mid 50s by the fourth quarter.

NEXT WEEK: We stay dry for the first half of the week; models are in better agreement with a cold front arriving Thursday night along with a chance of showers and possibly a thunderstorm. A new surge of cool, dry air arrives for Friday and the following weekend. At this point the weather is looking pretty good for the Alabama/LSU game in Tuscaloosa November 5. See the Weather Xtreme video for details.

TROPICS: Rina is now a tropical depression; what’s left of the former hurricane will be forced southward across the Western Caribbean in coming days, and the rest of the Atlantic basin is quiet.

WEATHER BRAINS: Don’t forget you can listen to our weekly 90 minute netcast anytime on the web, or on iTunes. This is the show all about weather featuring many familiar voices, including our meteorologists here at ABC 33/40.
