Storms over East Alabama are growing. In the Gadsden area, a wind gust to 37 mph was just measured at the airport.
The NWS Birmingham warns that the storms have lots of dry air aloft to work with. That can result in strong downdrafts, so expect gusty winds to 40-50 mph with the stronger storms. Hail is also possible.
The NWS has issued a significant weather alert for eastern St. Clair, eastern Etowah, Cherokee and Calhoun Counties.
Some of the storm could become briefly severe with the potential for damaging wind gusts and hail 1 inch or larger. Tornadoes will not be a problem with weak wind shear.
