THIS AFTERNOON: Rain is rather widespread across Southwest Alabama this afternoon… the rain is generally south of a line from Eutaw to Selma to Troy to Dothan. Strong storms have moved through Mobile County at times today with heavy rain and very frequent lighting.

Up on this end of the state, the sky is partly sunny with just a few isolated showers over far West Alabama. Birmingham reports 88 degrees at 2:00… almost all other observation stations were in the upper 80s.

WET DAY TOMORROW: We finally have a shot at beneficial rain tomorrow as the tropical moisture moves up into North Alabama. The 12Z models are more aggressive with the rain around here; the NAM is now at 0.64″ for Birmingham, while the GFS is printing 1.49″. Looks like rain amounts of at least one inch are likely along and west of I-65, with totals of 1/2 to 1 inch over the eastern counties. And, due to the clouds and rain, it is likely that most places won’t get out of the 70s tomorrow.

FRIDAY AND THE WEEKEND: Looks very warm (I would suggest hot is a better word) and mostly dry, with a good supply of sunshine all three days. Highs between 88 and 91 degrees, with only isolated afternoon showers.

AARON’S DREAM WEEKEND: The weather will be very warm at Talladega this race weekend, with highs between 87 and 90 degrees each day Friday through Sunday. We don’t expect any rain around the track Friday, and only isolated showers Saturday and Sunday. The chance of rain specifically at the Superspeedway both days is only 10 percent. Expect a decent amount of sunshine both days, so be sure and bring the sunscreen.

AT THE BEACH: Showers and storms are likely tomorrow along the Gulf Coast from Panama City west to Gulf Shores, but the weather looks mostly sunny Friday through Sunday. The high tomorrow will be in the 70s, but low to mid 80s are likely Friday and over the weekend. The sea water temperature at the Dauphin Island Sea Lab this afternoon is 77 degrees.

NEXT WEEK: We might sees a few isolated showers over the first half of the week, but the GFS continues the idea of a better chance of showers and storms toward the end of the week, followed by cooler temperatures as an upper trough carves out over the eastern half of the nation. See the Weather Xtreme video for details.

I had a great time today visiting with the 2nd graders at Deer Valley Elementary in Hoover, and the kindergarden students at Helena Elementary in Shelby County. Be looking for them on the Pepsi KIDCAM today at 5:00 and 6:00 on ABC 33/40 News. The next Weather Xtreme video will be posted here by 7:00 a.m. tomorrow…
