ON THE MAPS: A rather sharp cold front for August is near I-40 in Tennessee, and moving south. So far today, low clouds have kept the air over Alabama rather cool and stable, and showers and storms have been a no-show. But, storms are filling in nicely along the front to the north, and those will be moving into North Alabama in coming hours.
And, to the west, we also note strong storms over the Golden Triangle region of East Mississippi.
Bottom line is that we will hang on to the chance of showers and storms statewide tonight as the cold front moves through.
OUR WEEKEND: The position of the front is in question to some degree tomorrow; the 12Z models show a slower movement, and it looks like the dry air will cover Alabama tomorrow generally north of a line from Linden to Prattville to Roanoke. South of that line, we will need to maintain a chance of showers and storms as the front slowly drops south. North of the front, the day will be delightful with a mostly sunny sky and lower humidity levels. Both the GFS and the NAM are printing a high of 86 degrees tomorrow with dewpoints dropping into the 50s by tomorrow night.
Sunday morning will give us our first fall preview… temperatures will drop into the low 60s, but cooler spots across North Alabama will reach the upper 50s. The day will be sunny, the humidity will stay low, and the high will be around 90.
NEXT WEEK: Monday looks dry, but we will bring back a chance of showers and storms on Tuesday with rising moisture levels. Then, Wednesday through Friday look relatively dry. See the Weather Xtreme video for details.
AT THE BEACH: Scattered to numerous showers and storms are still possible along the Gulf Coast tomorrow from Panama City west to Gulf Shores, but they will thin out greatly Sunday and Monday with increasing amounts of sunshine. Highs will remain in the mid to upper 80s.
TROPICS: Tropical Depression 7 in the Central Atlantic has a hard road ahead… lots of dry, and then harsh winds aloft over the Caribbean. Not sure this one can survive, but a weak system like this will probably keep a general westward motion and I don’t expect it to be a candidate for entry into the Gulf of Mexico at this point. And, in the far eastern Atlantic, AL93 will move west and could become a tropical depression at any time, Traditionally these higher latitude systems recurve before reaching the U.S. mainland. Take a few minutes and watch the Weather Xtreme video for all of the details and graphics.
