THIS MORNING: We begin the day with a few scattered showers over Northwest Alabama; as I write this those showers are between Carbon Hill and Red Bay; they are moving slowly to the south/southeast.
Aside from those showers, most of today should be rain-free, with additional showers this afternoon being rather widely spaced. The high will be close to 90 degrees, and tomorrow should be a similar kind of day.
WEEKEND PREVIEW: Saturday is still looking wet at times as a cold front slices through Alabama. We will forecast a good chance of showers and thunderstorms, with rain amounts of around 1/2 inch for most North Alabama communities. The good news is that any tropical mischief that forms in the Gulf should move east toward the Florida Peninsula, so heavy rain or flooding should not be an issue. And, for now, the chance of severe weather Saturday looks rather small. It won’t be an all-day type wash-out, but it could rain at any time Saturday.
After the rain comes the refreshing change we have been advertising. Dry continental air rolls into Alabama Sunday with lower humidity; the day should be sunny with a high in the 77-80 degree range along with a fresh north breeze.
NEXT WEEK: Looking dry and pleasant for now. We should reach the 50s early Monday, then just a slow warming trend for the rest of the week. At this point it looks like we can safely forecast rain-free weather conditions for the northern half of Alabama Sunday through Thursday, so there is a good five day stretch of dry weather if you need it.
GHOST OF ISAAC: Our low in the northern Gulf has been drifting southward; NHC now has it in a “50 percent” circle… meaning a 50 percent chance it becomes a tropical depression or storm within 48 hours. Models are actually in good agreement, pushing this east toward North Florida, well to the south of here. If this becomes a storm, the name will be “Nadine”. One way or another, the main impact will be lots of rain for places like Tampa, Daytona Beach, and Jacksonville. It will have a hard time getting stronger due to the cooler water over the northern Gulf due to upwelling from Isaac last week.
FOOTBALL WEATHER: Just a small risk of a shower for high school football games across the northern half of Alabama tonight and tomorrow night. Otherwise, the sky should be mostly fair with temperatures falling through the 80s.
For Saturday’s Alabama/Western Kentucky game at Tuscaloosa’s Bryant/Denny Stadium, there is a good chance of showers and thunderstorms during the game (2:30 p.m. kickoff). Temperatures should be in the low 80s during the game.
Auburn visits Mississippi State Saturday; that is an early kickoff (11:00)… and rain is likely at Scott Field also with temperatures between 78 and 82 degrees during the game.
GULF COAST WEATHER: The surf will be pretty rough through Saturday due to the tropical low in the northern Gulf, and we will mention scattered to numerous showers and storms daily from Panama City west to Gulf Shores through Saturday. We should note, however, there will be some decent intervals of sunshine along the way. The greatest coverage of rain should come Saturday, then Sunday looks pleasant with a sunny sky and lower humidity. Highs will be mostly in the 80s through the weekend.
