RADAR CHECK: We have a few isolated showers over Northeast Alabama this afternoon… as expected… they are generally north of a line from Athens to Guntersville to Centre. Small, heavy downpours are just east of Huntsville, and near Fort Payne at 3:30 as I write this update. Elsewhere, the sky is partly sunny and temperatures are generally in the mid to upper 70s.

HEADED FOR THE 80s TOMORROW: The GFS is printing a high of 85 degrees for Birmingham tomorrow… it will be our warmest day so far in May if that verifies. The sky will mostly sunny with only a few fair weather cumulus clouds around.

SHOWERS RETURN FRIDAY: We will introduce the chance of showers Friday afternoon and Friday night as moist air moves northward into Alabama, and upward atmospheric motion increases. The sky will become mostly cloudy, and the high Friday afternoon will be in the 77-81 degree range.

WET AT TIMES SATURDAY: Periods of rain and possibly a thunderstorm are likely Saturday, but the rain won’t be continuous or especially heavy, and we don’t expect any severe weather. Some rain is possible at any hour of the day or night Saturday…. so make plans accordingly if you have something planned outdoors. We project rain amounts of one-half inch or less for most Alabama communities.

DRIER SUNDAY: The rain will end late Saturday night, and the sky will become mostly sunny on Sunday as a new surge of cooler and drier air moves in. The high will drop into the mid 70s Sunday with a fresh north breeze.

CLOSE TO RECORD LOWS EARLY NEXT WEEK: We will drop into the 40s early Monday and Tuesday morning… generally in the 40-45 degree range, with potential for upper 30s for the normally colder spots across North/Central Alabama. The record low for Tuesday (May 14) is 41 degrees, set in 1971, and we will that one a run for the money.

Expect maximum sunshine Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday… we begin to warm up Tuesday afternoon, and by Wednesday we should see a high close to 80 degrees.
