MORE SUMMER STORMS: More flooding issues in scattered spots around Alabama today… a flash flood warning was up earlier this afternoon for parts of Colbert, Franklin, Lauderdale, and Lawrence Counties in Northwest Alabama. A big storm at Haleyville dropped 0.67″ of rain in only 16 minutes. At mid-afternoon the heavier storms were over Marion and Winston Counties of Northwest Alabama, and in a broad zone from Anniston to Selma. Storms are moving very slowly, and under the stronger ones heavy rain and localized flooding issues are likely.
Temperatures are generally between 88 and 91 degrees.
WEEKEND WEATHER: The models are hinting that precipitable water values might be a touch lower tomorrow and Sunday, but not really enough confidence for any major changes to the forecast. A mix of sun and clouds both days with scattered showers and thunderstorms; highs between 88 and 91. Best chance of a storm during the afternoon and evening hours, but we can’t rule out a late night or morning shower or storm.
Not much change through the first few days of next week, but global models continue to show a highly amplified pattern toward the end of the week, with some chance of drier and slightly cooler air slipping into North Alabama Thursday and Friday. Pretty hard for this to happen in August, but it is possible. See the Weather Xtreme video for the maps, graphics, and details.
GULF COAST WEATHER: Looks pretty good through early next week… 6 to 8 hours of sunshine each day with a few scattered showers and storms around from Panama City over to Gulf Shores. Highs around 90 on the immediate coast, and the sea water temperature at the Dauphin Island Sea Lab this afternoon is 87 degrees.
TROPICS: All remains calm and tropical storm formation is not expected across the Atlantic basin through the weekend.
