RAIN ENDING LATER TODAY: We begin this day with rain over much of Alabama; heaviest rain at daybreak was from near Tuscaloosa to Greensboro to Demopolis and over to Meridian, MS. Rain will end from west to east during the next six hours, and most of the rain should be out of the state by early afternoon. Temperatures will hold in the 60s all day; some places might even fall a degree or two this afternoon in the wake of a cold front passage.

Drier air moves into Alabama tonight; the sky will clear, and by daybreak tomorrow most communities will be somewhere between 47 and 52 degrees. Tomorrow will be a nice day with ample sunshine and a high in the low 70s along with low humidity.

THE ALABAMA WEEKEND: The next impulse will bring rain to South Alabama Saturday; places like Mobile, Atmore, Andalusia, and Dothan will have a good chance of rain during the day. The rain could extend as far north as Greenville, Troy, and maybe even Auburn/Opelika, but the northern half of Alabama should stay dry. No doubt there will be some clouds around; we will forecast a mix of sun and clouds Saturday with a high in the low 70s.

We do note the NAM is much drier for South Alabama Saturday, showing very little rain there, but I believe the wetter GFS is the correct solution.

Sunday looks like a fine fall day statewide, with a mostly sunny sky and a high around 70 degrees. Sunday morning will be pretty chilly; the GFS is printing a low of 46 degrees for Birmingham… some of the colder pockets should visit the low to mid 40s.

NEXT WEEK: Another impulse could bring some rain to the Gulf Coast Tuesday, but for now the northern half of Alabama looks rain-free Monday through Wednesday with highs between 70 and 74; early morning lows will be in the cool 47-51 degree range.

FIRST FROST? All global models continue to point to a cold pattern for the eastern U.S. for the last 7 days of the month. The first cold shot moves into Alabama late next week; and there is a good chance we get down into the 30s by Friday and Saturday morning (October 25-26), with potential for frost. Another cold shot arrives toward Halloween as a high amplitude pattern/negative NAO continues to dominate the weather across North America.

FOOTBALL WEATHER: No rain for high football games begin tonight with a clearing sky, and tomorrow night looks great with clear and cool conditions. Both nights temperatures will fall through the 50s; you will need a jacket.

Alabama will host the Arkansas Razorbacks Saturday evening (6:00p CT kickoff) at Bryant-Denny Stadium; the sky will be mostly fair; about 72 degrees at kickoff, with temperatures falling into the 50s by the final whistle.

Auburn is on the road; they will take on the Texas A&M Aggies in College Station, TX Saturday (2:30p CT kickoff). The sky will be partly sunny with only a slight risk of a shower during the game; about 74 degrees at kickoff, then falling into the 60s by the fourth quarter.

RACE WEEKEND AT TALLADEGA: Rain is falling at the Superspeedway this morning, but the rain should be gone by early afternoon, and we expect dry weather tomorrow through Sunday with pleasant days, and fair chilly nights. Highs for the weekend will be in the low to mid 70s, with early morning lows generally in the upper 40s. The sky will become mostly cloudy at times Saturday as rain moves across South Alabama, but that wet weather should stay south of the Superspeedway; Sunday should be a sun filled day. A fine weekend for NASCAR fans.

AT THE BEACH: Periods of rain are likely today from Panama City to Gulf Shores with a mostly cloudy sky. Then, tomorrow, the sun could break out briefly, but rain moves back into the region tomorrow night and Saturday. Then, Sunday looks much better with a good supply of sunshine. Highs will be generally in the 70s.
