MILD AFTERNOON: Birmingham was reporting 69 degrees at 3:00 this afternoon… to the south Montgomery has soared to 80 degrees. The sky is mostly sunny with high clouds overhead; those clouds should make for a great sunset during the next hour.
COLDER AIR ARRIVES TONIGHT: A surge of colder air will move into the state tonight, and most locations will be in the upper 30s by daybreak tomorrow morning with a clear sky.
Tomorrow and Wednesday will be cool and dry, with a good supply of sunshine both days and a high not too far from 60 degrees. A number of North Alabama communities won’t make it out of the 50s tomorrow.
The 12Z GFS shows that we will stay dry on Thursday, with a partly sunny sky along with a high in the low to mid 60s.
FRIDAY/SATURDAY: Looks like a decent part of the day Friday will be dry, although a few showers could ease into the state by mid to late afternoon. Showers are not out of the question Friday night, and that could be an issue for some of the high school football playoff games across Alabama. Friday’s high will be in the mid to upper 60s.
Then, showers are likely Saturday with a strong cold front passing through. Difficult, if not impossible at this stage to give you specific start/stop times for the rain. Clearly there is a good chance of rain during the morning, and the rain could very linger into the afternoon, especially over East Alabama. The day will be cloudy and breezy with a high between 57 and 60 degrees.
ARCTIC BLAST SUNDAY: The coldest air so far this season will arrive Sunday, with strong north winds. The sky will become mostly sunny, but the high for places like Birmingham, Tuscaloosa, Anniston, and Gadsden will be only in the low to mid 40s, and the wind will make it feel colder. Folks up in the Tennessee Valley probably won’t get out of the 30s Sunday afternoon.
A signifiant freeze is likely early Monday, with most places seeing a low between 19 and 24 degrees. Colder valleys could see mid teens.
THANKSGIVING WEEK: We will be dry Monday and Tuesday with a slow warming trend. There has been good consistency in the idea of showers moving through Alabama late Wednesday, Wednesday night, and possibly into Thanksgiving morning, but of course this is more than a week away and the timing will change. Temperatures should be close to average with highs in the 50s and 60s, and lows in the 30s and 40s. See the Weather Xtreme video for the maps, graphics, and details.
