A cold front moved through most of Alabama late last night and was situated across the extreme southeast corner of Alabama this morning. Temperatures dropped about 8 to 10 degrees behind the front so that much of the northern two thirds of the state was in the 50s this morning. The area from Eufaula to Mobile was warmer with readings in the lower 60s. For the rest of the morning and perhaps into the early afternoon hours, light rain or drizzle will be possible, but cold air advection will see temperatures dropping into the 40s this afternoon. If you are headed out for the Alabama football game, bundle up and be prepared for a little light rain.
Sunday should be a better day with plenty of sunshine, however, I do not expect to see temperatures get out of the middle 40s across Central Alabama with a brisk north wind at 10 to 20 mph.
Monday we begin to transition into the next system which still poses some threat of winter weather for the Southeast US as well as a threat to disrupt Thanksgiving travel. A surface low is forecast to develop Monday in the Northwest Gulf of Mexico and move along the Gulf Coast Tuesday bringing a cold soaking rain to much of the Southeast US. By Wednesday the low moves into the Atlantic affecting Mid-Atlantic locations like Washington-Baltimore, New York, and Boston. Since this is the busiest travel day of the year, it has the potential to disrupt air travel across the eastern part of the US.
The latest NAM keeps the bulk of the winter weather threat over Arkansas, but the GFS brings a threat of wrap around snow into North Alabama Wednesday. These area always tricky forecast situations since computer models often do not handle shallow cold air situations very well. See the video for the maps. As with all of these situation, adjustments to the forecast may be needed.
After that we have some sunny weather into next weekend as temperatures warm up closer to seasonal values for the latter part of November.
