Be sure to watch the video this morning with the dramatic temperature trace as the front finally moved by my weather station dropping the temperature by 30 degrees in less than four hours.
It did take the cold air a while to push through all of Central Alabama yesterday, but it finally did and we are waking up to readings in the 30s this morning. The upper flow pattern remains out of the southwest, so it looks cloudy and somewhat wet through the middle of the upcoming week. For today, though, it looks like the clouds will stick around and with the clouds there is a chance for some patchy light rain or drizzle, but we are likely to be mainly dry. But the freezer door is open, so don’t expect to see much change in temperature with highs only into the middle 40s. If you plan to take in some of the area parades today, be sure to bundle up against the cold and the stiff north wind.
As you will see from the maps, the upper flow pattern remains southwesterly with a ridge to our east and a trough to our west. This will continue the flow of Pacific moisture across the Southeast US through the middle of the week before the trough to our west finally manages to move by us on Wednesday and Thursday. This presents us with an opportunity to dry out, but it will be a relatively short dry spell as another upper trough to our west sets up another wet pattern for next Saturday.
We will continue to be below our seasonal averages with highs today only in the 40s but climbing a tad into the 50s for the rest of the week. A break in the Pacific cloud cover will aloo the return of some sun possibly on Wednesday but more likely Thursday and Friday. Then the next shot of precipitation and clouds raises its ugly head as we go wet once again for next weekend.
The Mid-South had a brush with winter weather yesterday which created some travel issues from North Texas well into the Ohio River Valley, but things were calming down today. Looks like the pattern may present with another winter weather event by next weekend.
Looking out into Week 2, the pattern goes flat around the 18th, but it does not stay that way long as another deep trough with the promise of more winter weather for the Central US develops around the 22nd in time to wreak havoc on travelers for Christmas. Never a dull moment.
