RADAR CHECK: While the sky has become mostly overcast across Alabama this afternoon, there is nothing on the radar here. However, rain is moving into far West Mississippi, and we are still expecting a good rain around here late tonight and tomorrow morning as the weekend begins.
Temperatures are generally in the 48-54 degree range at mid-afternoon, yet another day with below average temperatures (we should be at 57 on December 13).
RAIN AHEAD: The general idea in the weekend forecast remains the same. The main 12 hour window for rain for North/Central Alabama comes from 10:00 tonight through 10:00 a.m. tomorrow, but the rain could linger in areas south and east of Birmingham into the early afternoon hours. No surface based instability, so no severe weather, and probably no thunder. Rain amounts of 1/2 to 1 inch are likely.
While tomorrow afternoon should be mostly dry, the clouds will linger. The high should be close to 60 degrees as we have a one day warm-up.
TO THE NORTH: Winter weather advisories and winter storm warnings are up from Missouri to New England; New York City is expecting 3 to 6 inches of snow over the next 24 hours.
COLDER SUNDAY: A stiff north wind of 10-20 mph Sunday will usher in colder air. We will forecast a clearing sky with a high only in the mid 40s. Clouds could hang tough over Northeast Alabama into the afternoon Sunday. We drop into the 20s early Monday morning with a clear sky and diminishing wind.
NEXT WEEK: The week looks pretty nice, with mostly sunny days and clear cold nights. Highs will be mostly in the 50s, although we might touch the 60 degree mark on one or two afternoons.
CHRISTMAS WEATHER: The GFS shows a good rain event on Saturday December 21, followed by a sharp change to colder weather on Sunday December 22 (parts of North Alabama might have a hard time getting out of the 30s). Christmas week is looking generally cold and dry, but it remains too early to know just how cold it will be. See the Weather Xtreme video for the maps, graphics, and details.
