The rain is finally moving out of Central Alabama this morning and should be out of all of Alabama by late morning. But don’t look for a quick clearing as the major upper trough will not move across the Southeast until tomorrow morning. Then we should see a return to some sunshine, but it will be cold. A surface high will be settling into the Southeast from our northwest bringing some chilly temperatures to the area.
Tuesday and Wednesday morning lows will be into the 20s. Christmas morning is likely to be the coldest with lows in the lower 20s which means that some spots will dip into the teens for morning lows. Christmas day should be bright and sunny, but the afternoon highs will remain below seasonal values as highs climb barely to 50 degrees.
For the days after Christmas, we stay with a long wave trough position over the eastern half of the country. That will keep much of the eastern US at or below seasonal temperatures for late December. A series of short waves will be moving through the flow bringing some clouds from time to time, however, with a generally dry atmosphere, I do not expect to see any precipitation for the next week or so. So 2013 will be ending on a chilly note and 2014 will start on that same note.
The GFS maintains the notion of a cold pattern for the eastern half of the country into Week 2 with the long wave trough essentially set up along the Mississippi River. We’ll have to watch this cold pattern for some winter mischief potential, but certainly nothing we can hang our hat on just yet.
