RAINY DAY: Do rainy days and Mondays get you down? Anyone remember the Carpenters?

“Talkin’ to myself and feelin’ old
Sometimes I’d like to quit
Nothing ever seems to fit
Hangin’ around
Nothing to do but frown
Rainy Days and Mondays always get me down.”

At daybreak widespread rain is over north and west Alabama, and that rain will expand east and south during the day. Rain amounts of around 1/2 inch are likely, and the air is stable so there won’t be any severe weather problems. The rain will move out of the state during the evening hours.

DRY DAY TOMORROW: Tuesday will be dry with a pleasant afternoon; after a low in the upper 30s we will rise into the upper 50s with a partly sunny sky.

MUCH COLDER WEDNESDAY: Two “Alberta clipper” systems (they usually originate in Alberta, Canada) will impact Alabama with cold shots later in the week. The first arrives Wednesday; in advance of this we could see touch of light rain late tomorrow night, and then a risk of snow flurries Wednesday morning in the colder air. No accumulation is expected for most places, although there could be dusting across the high terrain of Northeast Alabama.

We will struggle to reach the low 40s Wednesday afternoon with a chilly north breeze of 10-20 mph.

Thursday morning will be cold with low down in the low to mid 20s. Then, during the day Thursday, we warm up nicely with a high in the mid 50s along with a partly to mostly sunny sky.

ANOTHER COLD SHOT FRIDAY: The next clipper brings more cold air on Friday. Very doubtful we get out of the 30s with a mix of sun and clouds. Then, early Saturday morning, we expect a low between 16 and 22 degrees as the weekend begins.

SATURDAY/SUNDAY: The weekend will be dry with a slow moderating trend. The high Saturday will be in the upper 40s, followed by low 50s Sunday. The air will be dry, and the sky will be sunny both days.

LONG RANGE: I think the key word for the rest of January is “changeable”. There will be cold shots, but they won’t last too long. See the Weather Xtreme video for the maps, graphics, and more specific details.
