CHILLY MAY MORNING: Feels more like winter this morning… here are some temperatures across Alabama at daybreak:
Black Creek (just northeast of Gasdsden) 39
Fort Payne 39
Valley Head 41
Sycamore 42
Gadsden 43
Anniston 45
Concord 46
Montevallo 47
Tuscaloosa 49
Birmingham 50
We expect a partly sunny sky today with a high in the low 70s; the air is very dry in the low levels and the chance of significant rain is very, very small.
THE ALABAMA WEEKEND: A long wave upper trough will be anchored over the eastern third of the nation, and lobes of energy rotating around the base of the trough will bring the chance of showers to the state. Some points about the rain chances…
*The most widespread rain will come over the Tennessee Valley of extreme North Alabama.
*Some thunder is possible
*Due to the very cold air aloft, some of the showers might produce small hail or graupel
*No rain is expected over the southern half of the state
*Timing the rain start/stop times will be very difficult
*The sun will be out at times
The high resolution NAM hints most of the rain tomorrow will come during the morning hours, and mainly along and north of U.S. 278 (Hamilton to Cullman to Gadsden). Then, on Sunday, it shows rain during the morning hours down to I-20 (Tuscaloosa, Birmingham, Anniston). See the maps on the Weather Xtreme video.
Highs over the weekend will be in the 70s, still below average for the middle of May in Alabama.
NEXT WEEK: A building upper high will mean dry and warmer weather for the state, with sunny days and clear nights Monday through Friday. Highs warm back into the 80s, and we could see some low 90s by the latter half of the week over the western and southern counties.
HANGOUT MUSIC FESTIVAL: Delightful weather at Gulf Shores this weekend with sunny days and clear nights; highs will be in the 70s on the immediate coast. Next weather will remain dry on the Central Gulf Coast from Panama City to Gulf Shores with highs rising to near 80 on the immediate coast, with upper 80s inland. The sea water temperature this morning at the Dauphin Island Sea Lab is a cool 68 degrees.
