RADAR CHECK: Rain and storms have been pretty extensive across the western half of the state so far today, and heavier storms are moving into the Birmingham metro as I write this around 3:15 p.m.

An upper low west of Alabama, centered near Texarkana, AR, is keeping our weather rather unsettled today, and we will maintain the chance of showers and storms tonight. The storms across Alabama are not severe by classic definition (1″ diameter hail or 58 mph winds)… but they are producing heavy rain and a good bit of lightning. Winds are gusting to 30/35 mph in spots.

TOMORROW AND FRIDAY: The upper low will slowly weaken and lift out, but a very moist airmass will stay in place, and we will mention scattered to numerous showers and thunderstorms both days. The sky will feature more clouds than sun, and highs will be in the 80s. While the best chance of showers and storms will come during the afternoon and evening hours, a late night or morning shower sure can’t be ruled out in this environment.

OUR WEEKEND: Showers and thunderstorms will thin out a bit over the weekend, but they will still be around, especially during the afternoon and evening Saturday and Sunday. Look for a mix of sun and clouds both days with highs in the mid to upper 80s. The chance of any one spot getting wet both days is about one in three.

Very similar weather will continue into early next week.

GULF COAST WEATHER: Showers and thunderstorms are likely tomorrow and Friday from Panama City to Gulf Shores with only a limited amount of sunshine, also there is potential for dangerous rip currents. Showers thin out over the weekend and early next week with increasing amounts of sunshine. Highs will be in the 80s, and the sea water temperature is very close to 80 degrees.

WEATHER BRAINS: Don’t forget you can listen to our weekly 90 minute netcast anytime on the web, or on iTunes. This is the show all about weather featuring many familiar voices, including our meteorologists here at ABC 33/40. We will produce this week’s show tomorrow night at 8:30 CT.
