RADAR CHECK: The rain in Alabama at mid-afternoon was generally south of a line from Selma to Rockford to Ranburne, and that rain will be out of the state very shortly. The sky is generally cloudy, and in the cooler air moving into the state we have only low 60s at Haleyville and Cullman.
The sky will clear tonight, and we project lows early tomorrow in the 48-52 degree range. Tomorrow looks dry and pleasant; the sky will be partly to mostly sunny with a high in the lower 70s.
THE ALABAMA WEEKEND: The next impulse will bring some risk of rain to South Alabama Saturday; the main risk of rain will be along and south of Alabama Highway 10 (Butler to Camden to Greenville to Troy to Abbeville), but a little light rain could be found as far north as Union Springs and Opelika. The good news is that the northern half of the state will be dry (north of U.S. 80)… with a mix of sun and clouds. The high around here Saturday should be in the mid 70s.
Colder air moves in Saturday night, and most models have us down in the middle 40s by daybreak Sunday….. some of the colder pockets could be close to 40 degrees. Then, Sunday promises to be a delightful day, with ample sunshine and a high at or just over 70 degrees.
FIRST FROST: Global models continue to advertise a very cold airmass moving into Alabama next week; the 12Z GFS hints we won’t get out of the 50s Wednesday, followed by a low in the middle 30s early Thursday for our first frost potential of the season. Colder spots could even see a light freeze early Thursday. And, another cold shot shows up around Halloween; see the Weather Xtreme video for the maps, graphics, and details.
FOOTBALL WEATHER: No rain for high football games begin tonight with a clearing sky, and tomorrow night looks great with clear and cool conditions. Both nights temperatures will fall through the 50s; you will need a jacket.
Alabama will host the Arkansas Razorbacks Saturday evening (6:00p CT kickoff) at Bryant-Denny Stadium; the sky will be mostly fair; about 73 degrees at kickoff, with temperatures falling into the 50s by the final whistle.
Auburn is on the road; they will take on the Texas A&M Aggies in College Station, TX Saturday (2:30p CT kickoff). The sky will be partly sunny with only a slight risk of a shower during the game; about 74 degrees at kickoff, then falling into the 60s by the fourth quarter.
RACE WEEKEND AT TALLADEGA: Rain has ended at the Superspeedway this afternoon, but the rain should be gone by early afternoon, and we expect dry weather tomorrow through Sunday with pleasant days, and fair chilly nights. Highs for the weekend will be in the low to mid 70s, and a chilly Sunday morning low in the mid 40s. The sky will become cloudy at times Saturday as rain moves across South Alabama, but that wet weather should stay south of the Superspeedway; Sunday should be a sun filled day. A fine weekend for NASCAR fans.
AT THE BEACH: After several showers today, tomorrow should be brighter with intervals of sunshine, but rain moves back into the region tomorrow night and Saturday. Then, Sunday looks much better with a good supply of sunshine. Highs will be generally in the 70s.
