OCTOBER HEAT: Afternoon highs will remain in the low 90s for most Alabama communities today and tomorrow, about ten degrees above average for the first of October. A few scattered showers are possible across the southern quarter of Alabama this afternoon (mainly south of U.S. 84)… but we will bring in a chance of showers statewide tomorrow and tomorrow night as moisture levels rise.

THE WEEKEND: With the approach of a cold front and upper trough, periods of rain are likely across Alabama over the weekend. Here are the key messages…

*The weekend won’t be a wash-out. But it will rain at times both days; the most widespread rain will be near the coast.

*Rain amounts over far South Alabama will be in the 2-4 inch range for many places; totals across the northern half of the state will be generally between 1 and 2 inches.

*Some thunder is possible, but we do not expect severe thunderstorms.

*Highs will be in the 80s on Saturday, then falling to near 80 degrees Sunday.

NEXT WEEK: A few lingering showers are possible Monday over South Alabama, otherwise the week at this point looks dry with highs in the 70s/low 80s, and lows mostly in the 50s. See the video briefing for maps, graphics, and more details.

TROPICS: The Atlantic basin is very quiet and tropical storm formation is not expected through the next seven days. Global models continue to hint at some potential for development over the Southwest Gulf in 7-14 days; it is simply something to watch for now.

FOOTBALL WEATHER: Alabama travels to Starkville to take on Mississippi State Saturday (11a CT kickoff). A few showers are possible during the game… temperatures will be in the low 80s with a mostly cloudy sky.

Auburn is also on the road; they play Tennessee in Knoxville (2:30p CT kickoff). Showers are possible; temperatures will hover around 80 degrees during the game.

UAB will host Samford at Protective Stadium in Birmingham Saturday (2:30p CT kickoff). It will be a mostly cloudy afternoon with a chance of some rain at times. Temperatures will be in the low to mid 80s at kickoff.

Tuskegee, Alabama A&M, South Alabama, West Alabama all have home games (Alabama A&M plays in Mobile); you will need the rain gear as some rain is possible across all of Alabama Saturday and Saturday night.

ON THIS DATE IN 1977: An F3 tornado traveled through Montfort Heights in the greater Cincinnati area, it destroyed 12 homes and damaged 15 others. There were 17 injuries.

Look for the next video briefing here by 3:00 this afternoon… enjoy the day!
