One of our blog family members, Goldwing Dave, was looking for a good place to eat a couple of hours away from Birmingham (a great excuse for a long bike ride), and I suggested Pap’s Place in Ackerman, Mississippi. Jason Simpson turned me on to this place, and it has become a tradition for us every year during the Southeast Severe Storms Symposium at Mississippi State University (this year’s symposium is March 23-24). Dave made the trip, and he shared this note and some pictures…
“Wow, what a trip. The weather could not have been more agreeable, we started off wearing some cool weather gear, but stripped that on our first stop in Tuscaloosa. The temps were just right and the partly cloudy skies were perfect.
We did, of course, encounter traffic in the Tuscaloosa, and Starkville areas, but it was not too bad.
We arrived at Paps Place at 120, ten minutes before they closed. We still were able to eat…. and eat we did. I had the fried chicken, green beans, mac&cheese, cornbread, rice and hushpuppies…. and you were right, they were awesome. Tasted like momma cooked it. I’ve never had restaurant fried chicked that tasted like home made. (Church’s, KFC..etc… they dont come close) My buddies had the fried fish and the blackened fish and also agreed they were awesome.
Thanks for recommending this. With the perfect weather and the perfect food, it was the perfect trip. I hope you don’t mind if I ask for another recommendation in the future.
On a side note: Now, as storms come into the state, I will know exactly where Reform, Gordo, Buhl, and Elrod are. I noticed all those signs and said.. “James mentions those places.”
I take it you found Paps on a recommendation after leaving Miss State weather symposium?? Thats the excuse I gave anyway when someone in the group asked “How in the heck did James Spann find this place?”
