It is hot, hot and dry across Alabama on this Saturday afternoon.

Well, not entirely.

But for the second day in a row thunderstorms are slow about forming. Only a few isolated showers and maybe some thunder dotted the North and Central Alabama landscape.

There was a little more action over Extreme Southeast Alabama. Those showers were part of a group that extended into Georgia.

Movement of the Alabama showers generally eastward.

I would estimate that if you shoved all the showers and few thunderstorms together in one group, only about 10% of the state would be covered.

But the main story across Alabama this afternoon is the heat and humidity. Look at these 2 o’clock official temperatures:

92 Haleyville and Huntsville
94 Greenville
95 Birmingham and Anniston
97 Tuscaloosa
79 Eufaula, cooled by a thunderstorm

HOW ABOUT THE OLE HEAT INDEX*
103 Tuscaloosa and Anniston
104 Birmingham and Greenville

Did you know that when the NWS decided to use that index, it was not called the Heat Index at first? It was known as the Discomfort Index. I happened to be on duty the first time we used it and it caused a huge uproar from the public and media. One DJ on a local radio station wondered over the air of we had lost our mind?

I was beginning to wonder the same thins!
