THIS AFTERNOON: Despite a surface front approaching, there is nothing on radar at 3:00 this afternoon across Alabama. We will hang on to the risk of isolated showers through the evening, but as forecast most places won’t get wet. Temperatures are generally in the mid 90s.
TOMORROW THROUGH SUNDAY: I guess you could hang on to a slight risk of a shower tomorrow, but again most places won’t get wet as the front dissipates over Alabama. The weekend will feature sunny weather Saturday and Sunday with heat levels slowly coming down. The high Saturday will be in the low to mid 90s, but by Sunday some places could hold in the upper 80s thanks to a northerly flow on the west side of Irene, which will be running up the East Coast of the U.S.
NEXT WEEK: Monday looks dry and pleasant, but we will see a return of moist air by mid-week, with scattered showers and thunderstorms possible by Wednesday.
FOOTBALL WEATHER: Time for high school football to crank up across Alabama. The sky will be mostly fair tonight and tomorrow night (just a slight risk of a shower this evening). Kickoff temperatures will be in the upper 80s, falling into the upper 70s by the fourth quarter. Winds will be light.
IRENE: Top winds are still 115 mph as the system is turning north. The 18Z models have shifted slightly west, but the general idea remain the same. Irene will pass over the Outer Banks of North Carolina Saturday night, followed by an arrival over Long Island Sunday afternoon and then up into New England.
Irene will peak in intensity during the next 24 hours, most likely remaining a category three hurricane as it approaches the Outer Banks. Then, the system will weaken, most likely into a tropical storm or weak hurricane as it moves into Long Island Sunday evening.
Clearly, the greatest threat with Irene is flooding and power outages. This storm won’t knock down buildings or create major structural damage, but rain totals of 4-10 inches are likely along the path, with isolated amounts to one foot. And, winds will knock down trees and power lines, and power outages could be extended in some places along the upper Atlantic coast.
If you are traveling in or out of New York City or Boston Sunday or Monday, expect serious delays and headaches. Irene will dissipate over Eastern Canada by Tuesday. Please take a few minute to watch the Weather Xtreme video for all of the graphics and details.
TD 10: The tenth tropical depression of the season is in the East Atlantic, and should become Tropical Storm Jose soon. This one is no threat to land as upper winds will carry it northwest very slowly over open water through the weekend.
The rest of the Atlantic basin is quiet for now.
