MILD MARCH DAYS: Look for a high at or just over 70 degrees in most places this afternoon with a good supply of sunshine. Then tomorrow could very well be our warmest day so far this year; the NAM is printing a high of 77 degrees for Birmingham (warmest day so far was 76 degrees on March 2).
Look for a mix of sun and clouds tomorrow, but clouds will thicken late in the day as a disturbance moves east from Texas. Some rain will reach the state tomorrow night, and will continue into early Wednesday morning; rain amounts of around 1/4 to 1/2 inch can be expected. I guess a little thunder is not out of the question, but this is not a severe weather setup. I would say the main window for rain will come from about 7:00 p.m. tomorrow through 9:00 a.m. Wednesday.
COLDER AIR RETURNS AT MID-WEEK: As the rain moves out Wednesday morning, colder air moves in. We will be close to 60 degrees at daybreak Wednesday, but temperatures will fall through the 50s during the day with a strong north wind of 15-30 mph. We could very well reach the upper 40s by late afternoon, and the wind will make it feel colder.
A freeze is likely by daybreak Thursday… most communities will experience a low between 26 and 32 degrees with a clear sky and diminishing wind.
THURSDAY/FRIDAY: These two days will feature a sunny sky; the high Thursday will be in the 50s, but we warm back into the 60s Friday. We should mention that another freeze is possible early Friday with low 30s likely.
THE ALABAMA WEEKEND: Moist air returns Friday night, and we will need to mention a chance of showers both Saturday and Sunday with a mostly cloudy sky thanks to a southwest flow aloft. The rain won’t be continuous, but as you make weekend plans just understand the rain could come at any time. Highs will be mostly in the 60s, and rain amounts over the weekend will average around 1/2 inch. No severe weather threat; just occasional rain showers for the most part.
NEXT WEEK: The rain ends Monday as a low pressure center over the northeast Gulf of Mexico lifts out; Tuesday and Wednesday should be dry with seasonal temperatures. See the Weather Xtreme video for the maps, graphics, and details.
The good news is that we see no sign of any major severe weather setup for Alabama for the next 10 to 15 days.
