More Strong Storms Fire Up Later Today
MORE SUMMER STORMS: On the maps this morning we have a surface boundary (we don’t call them “cold fronts” this time of the year) lined up near I-20. North of the front, temperatures are in the 60s… but to the south it is very humid with 70s and low 80s just before daybreak. No rain on radar across Alabama, but we note strong storms over Arkansas, and those will ride along the boundary and move in here later this morning. Continue reading
More Strong/Severe Storms Likely Later Today
ANOTHER ACTIVE DAY AHEAD: Alabama is rain-free at sunrise, but another round of strong to severe thunderstorms is likely later today and tonight. SPC has defined an “enhanced risk” (level 3/5) of severe thunderstorms for much of Northeast Alabama, for Birmingham and points north and east. A “slight risk” (level 2/5) extends down to Tuscaloosa, Montgomery, and Eufaula, and a “marginal risk” (level 1/5) covers much of the rest of South Alabama. Continue reading
Weekend Mix Of Sun And Scattered Storms
RADAR CHECK: Strong thunderstorms are pushing through West-Central Alabama at mid-afternoon… they are under severe limits at 3p CT but are producing heavy rain, gusty winds, and lots of lightning. Those storms will continue pushing into the southern half of the state over the next few hours. Continue reading
Heavy Rain; Strong Thunderstorms For Some Today
RADAR CHECK: A nearly stationary band of rain and storms has developed early this morning from the Tennessee Valley down into parts of East Alabama. These storms are very efficient rain producers, and flash flood warnings have been issued for parts of Lauderdale, Limestone, Morgan, Cullman, Blount, and St. Clair counties during the pre-dawn hours. Continue reading
Strong Storms Possible Later Today
An organized mass of storms is expected to form over Tennessee later today; this MCS (Mesoscale Convective System) will move into North Alabama with potential for strong winds and heavy rain. We also note there is a flash flood watch in effect for areas north of a line from Russellville to Birmingham to Heflin through tomorrow afternoon. Continue reading
Sun, Heat, Scattered Storms
RADAR CHECK: On this hot summer afternoon we have widely scattered, random showers and thunderstorms that are drifting to the west/southwest. They are producing heavy rain, strong winds, and gobs of lightning. Away from the storms, it is a mostly sunny, hot day with temperatures in the 90s. Scattered storms end soon after sunset, and tonight will be mostly fair with a low in the 70s. Continue reading
Hot Summer Days; Isolated Afternoon Storms
HIGHS STAY IN THE 90s: Look for highs in the 95-99 degree range today and over the weekend as the upper ridge remains in place across the southern U.S. Each day we will see a few isolated, “pop up” thunderstorms around, mostly between 2:00 and 8:00 p.m. While most places won’t see a drop of rain, where the storms do form (they will be in random locations), they could be heavy with potential for strong winds and small hail. Continue reading
Temperatures In The 90s; Storms Hard To Find Today
HOT SUMMER WEATHER: Showers are almost impossible to find across Alabama this afternoon; temperatures are mostly in the mid 90s. Tonight will be mostly fair with a low in the 70s. Continue reading
Hot Summer Days Roll On; Isolated Storms
NEW DAY, OLD FORECAST: An upper ridge is stretched out across the southern U.S… and will keep Alabama “toasty” through the weekend with highs in the 90s and lows in the 70s. You can never rule out a brief shower or storm on hot summer days here, but the chance of any one front yard getting wet today and tomorrow is only 10-20 percent. We do note a few showers over the northwest corner of Alabama early this morning. Continue reading
Only Isolated Showers/Storms; Hot Through The Weekend
RADAR CHECK: We have a few small, isolated, short lived showers across Alabama this afternoon, but most communities are simply hot and dry with temperatures in the 90s. Any showers around this evening will end quickly after sunset, and tonight will be mostly fair with a low in the 70s. Continue reading
