A Look At The Alabama Severe Weather Threat
A vigorous weather system will bring the potential for strong to severe thunderstorms across Alabama after midnight into tomorrow morning. While instability values are relatively modest, the dynamics involved will overcome that, most likely, with jet stream level winds of 120 knots, and 90 knots at 500 mb (18.000 feet off the ground). Strong to extreme low level shear will be in place. Continue reading
Severe Storms Possible Sunday
RADAR CHECK: A few scattered showers are over Central Alabama this afternoon, but most of the state is rain-free despite a mostly cloudy sky and a stalled front over the northwest counties. North of the front, temperatures are only in the low 60s in places like Hamilton and Haleyville, but to the south we are seeing mid to upper 70s. Continue reading
Showers Today; Severe Storms Possible Sunday Morning
A FEW SHOWERS TODAY: A cold front is creeping into Northwest Alabama early this morning, and we have a few showers ahead of the front. Moisture is limited, and there is little upper support, but we will maintain the chance of showers across Alabama today… otherwise the sky will be mostly cloudy with a high in the 70s. I would not call it a “rainy day”, but just be ready for a passing shower from time to time. Continue reading
A Few Showers Tomorrow; Severe Storms Possible Sunday
WARM IS THE WORD: Temperatures are mostly in the 81-85 degree range across Alabama this afternoon with a partly sunny sky. Clouds will increase across the state tonight ahead of a cold front. Continue reading

SUMMER PREVIEW CONTINUES: The high in Birmingham yesterday was 85 degrees… 12 degrees above the average high of 73, and 3 degrees shy of the record high for April 10, 88 set in 1995. Look for similar warmth today; we reach the mid 80s this afternoon with a partly sunny sky. A strong south wind will develop during the day, averaging 15-25 mph with higher gusts…. a wind advisory is in effect for about the northern third of the state. Continue reading

Summer-Like Today; Severe Storms Possible This Weekend
BIG WARM-UP: For most Alabama communities, today should be the warmest day so far this year. With sunshine in full supply we project a high in the mid 80s this afternoon… so far Birmingham’s warmest day was this past Sunday (April 7) when the high was 82. The weather won’t change much tomorrow; still warm and dry with a partly sunny sky along with a high between 82 and 85. Continue reading
Warmest Day So Far This Year Tomorrow

Lingering Showers This Morning; Stormy Weekend Ahead
RADAR CHECK: Lingering showers continue across parts of Central Alabama this morning as an upper trough is moving through the state. Most of the rain should be over by midday, but a few stray afternoon showers aren’t totally out of the question. Otherwise, today will be cloudy and mild with a high in the mid to upper 70s. Continue reading
Strong/Severe Storms Still Possible Tonight
EYES ON THE RADAR: No severe storms are in progress across Alabama at mid-afternoon; there is a large mass of rain over the Tennessee Valley, and the rest of the state is mostly dry with only isolated showers. There are some big breaks in the cloud cover over West and Southwest Alabama, where temperatures are approaching 80 degrees… this is one area to watch this evening for new thunderstorm development since the air there is becoming quite unstable.
