Looks like a beautiful Fall day – and weekend – in store for Central Alabama and much of the eastern half of the country with a cold front pushing off the East Coast of the US. It will be replaced with a surface high pressure system now centered over the Central Plains states which will migrate to the east and northeast for the next couple of days. There will be a stiff northerly wind at 10 to 20 mph today with highs across the area only in the 60s. Early morning satellite imagery shows a few high clouds in the Alabama sky, but we should see a good deal of sunshine today.
Great weather for football, as Auburn plays at Arkansas at 5:00 pm; the sky will be sunny with a kickoff temperature near 55 degrees, falling quickly into the 40s by halftime. UAB will host Middle Tennessee State at Legion Field in Birmingham (12:00pm CT kickoff); the sky will be sunny with a temperature of 62 degrees at kickoff, 64 degrees by the final whistle with a stiff north wind of 10-20 mph. Alabama is off this week.
The upper trough that ushered the front and rain through here late Thursday and early Friday will be replaced with a strong upper ridge Sunday. The cold air advection along with good radiational cooling will keep us cool Sunday morning with lows around 40 degrees, so some of those cooler spots will dip into the 30s once again. Sunday will be sunny but cool again with highs in the lower 60s.
Monday the ridge moves over the eastern US and the surface high migrates further northeastward, so we begin a nice warm up. Look for highs by Tuesday and Wednesday to be near 70.
An approaching upper trough on Wednesday should force a cold front into and through the Southeast US on Thursday. It looks like very late Wednesday evening and the first half of Thursday will be the best chances for rain. The system appears to come through quickly so I do not expect a great deal of rain, perhaps on the order of half an inch or so. The rain should move out briskly Thursday afternoon as the upper trough moves quickly into New England and is replaced by another upper ridge. This cool down should be short-lived and the air will not be quite as cool as the current air.
With another upper ridge in place, we should see another nice weekend for next weekend.
No severe weather on the board for the next three days, and the tropics are quiet as we are heading into the final days of the 2013 hurricane season.
Not a great deal of action seen in voodoo country as the GFS depicts an upper high situated over the Gulf of Mexico for much of Week 2.
