WARMER WEEKEND: Sure looks like we are entering a period of unusually quiet weather for Alabama for at least the next seven days. As you all know, we can have some very wild weather this time of the year… tomorrow is the 18th anniversary of the Blizzard of 93 (March 12-13… 13 inches officially in Birmingham; some places with over 20 inches)… and anything else goes from floods to sub-freezing cold to tornadoes. But, it looks like we are going to be able to take a breather in the weather office.

Look for highs up in the low 70s tomorrow and Sunday as the warm-up continues. Tomorrow will be sunny.. followed by just a few scattered clouds Sunday. It should be a wonderful weekend.

NEXT WEEK: A weak disturbance will bring a chance of showers Monday night… but nothing really heavy and certainly no chance of severe weather. Rain amounts should be a quarter-inch or less. Tuesday through Thursday look very nice, with partly to mostly sunny days and highs in the low 70s. Maybe mid 70s Wednesday and Thursday. Then, we might consider mentioning a small risk of a shower at the end of the week on Friday, but the latest GFS runs have trended drier.

AT THE BEACH: Next week is Spring Break week for many Alabama students, and many are headed south this weekend. Expect lots of sunshine this weekend on the Gulf Coast from Panama City west to Gulf Shores with highs on the immediate coast in the mid 60s. Remember, the ocean is still cool and that limits ability of the air to really get warm. The sea water temperature at Dauphin Island this afternoon is only 61 degrees. Once you get a few miles inland, low to mid 70s are likely. The weather looks generally dry Monday through Thursday with highs in the 60s on the coast, with 70s inland. The chance of a shower on these four days for now looks very small. A few showers could show up Friday, but they will be isolated and nothing to really worry about at this point. Pretty amazing that we are not expecting at least one really cold day next week… that is usually part of the Spring Break mix.

LONG RANGE: The operational GFS shows no severe weather threats or really cold air invasions for the rest of March, but we do note the NAO (North Atlantic Oscillation) goes negative in about 10-15 days… another late season cold snap is to be expected at some point down the line.

WEATHER BRAINS: Don’t forget you can listen to our weekly 30 minute netcast anytime on the web, or on iTunes. This is the show all about weather featuring many familiar voices, including our meteorologists here at ABC 33/40.
