THE 21ST NIGHT OF SEPTEMBER: Anybody remember this song from Earth, Wind, and Fire?

“Do you remember the
21st night of September?
Love was changing the minds of pretenders
While chasing the clouds away

Our hearts were ringing
In the key that our souls were singing.
As we danced in the night,
Remember how the stars stole the night away”

That song always floats around in my mind every 21st of September for some reason. Guess that is what happens when you grow up in a radio station playing these songs.

TODAY: While we will still have some risk of showers or storms today, they will be widely spaced, and the day will feature some decent intervals of sunshine once the morning fog and low clouds burn off. The day will also be warmer with a high up in the low to mid 80s.

TOMORROW/FRIDAY: We stay warm tomorrow, and the coverage of showers and storms should increase tomorrow afternoon and tomorrow night in response to an approaching front. We reach the mid 80s tomorrow with some sun at times away from the showers. A thunderstorm is possible as well, but severe weather (at least on a widespread basis) is not expected.

We will hang on to the risk of lingering showers Friday morning, but the should become partly sunny Friday afternoon as drier air moves in, and the best chance of showers and storms moves down into South Alabama. The rain should be over in time for high school football games Friday night.

WEEKEND OUTLOOK: Saturday still looks dry and pleasant, with a good supply of sunshine through scattered clouds. We start the day in the upper 50s, and rise into the low 80s by afternoon.

I think we still need to mention just the chance of a shower Sunday afternoon as energy rotates around the deep upper low north of here. We also will have to watch the low cloud deck associated with that upper low; it might impact extreme North Alabama up around the Tennessee Valley.

NEXT WEEK: After a slight risk of a shower Monday due to the departing upper low, the middle of the week for now looks dry and pleasant.

OPHELIA IS ON THE BOARD: Tropical Storm Ophelia is in the Atlantic, about halfway between the Lesser Antilles and the coast of Africa. Most of the guidance has shifted to the right, and it looks like Ophelia will pass north of the Caribbean, and remains a candidate to recurve into the Atlantic east of the U.S. See the Weather Xtreme video for details. The rest of the Atlantic basin is quiet for now.

WEATHER BRAINS: Don’t forget you can listen to our weekly 90 minute netcast anytime on the web, or on iTunes. This is the show all about weather featuring many familiar voices, including our meteorologists here at ABC 33/40.
