Getting lots of reports of icing and accidents from I-20 east of Birmingham…

…Accident with injuries at I-20 and Old Leeds
…Accident with vehicle overturned I-20 East at I-459
…Numerous accidents at the 20/459 interchange…think about how elevated much of that interchange is
…Icing at Kilgore and I-20

Temperatures in the Birmingham Metro are still in the upper 20s to near 30 for the most part. They are beginning to edge above freezing in the Bessemer area and approaching freezing in the Helena and Alabaster areas. The good news is that the precipitation is lifting northeastward now, but icing on bridges, overpasses and some roads will continue until readings edge above freezing enough for the ice to melt. Remember that raised surfaces, like bridges, will take longer.

The freezing rain advisory continues until 3 p.m. for generally areas from Montgomery to Birmingham and up toward Cullman. It continues until noon for areas west of there, where temperatures are slowly coming up. More rain is lifting northeastward from Marion County down to Tuscaloosa then into South Central Alabama. From Tuscaloosa on south, temperatures are in the middle 30s and problems should be ending. Places further north into northern Tuscaloosa, Walker, Marion and Winston Counties will see more problems until noon or a little after that as well because readings are still around 30F there.
