Wow, the upcoming seven days is very quiet for the Southeast and Alabama. And we can use it with the severe weather we had on Wednesday with the southeast portion of Alabama hit very hard. Fortunately there were no deaths and very few injuries. When I look at the damage, I’m amazed that no one was killed especially in the skating rink in Montgomery.
Today should be a fine day but colder air with be ushered into the state with a rather chilly day on tap for Sunday and Monday. Temperatures will be quite chilly on Sunday and Monday morning with readings bottoming out in the lower 30s – with a few upper 20s in those normally colder valley locations. The reinforcing cold air today and Sunday could mean a snow flake or two for the northeast corner of Alabama, but the atmosphere is going to be very dry so whatever occurs will be minimal.
With a fairly tight pressure gradient, wind Sunday and Monday may approach lake wind advisory criteria, so be aware that it could be breezy if you have plans for activities that take you outside and may be affected by the wind.
But as the cut off low along the Atlantic coast begins to make its way eastward, we will gradually come under a more zonal flow and a weak ridge. With that change the weather should warm up nicely so that by the end of next week, on the biggest shopping day of the year, highs should be into the mid and upper 60s.
And it’s going to stay dry. With a large surface high and an upper ridge, we will stay rain free at least into next weekend. In fact, most of the country will be rather quite weatherwise. The only exceptions to that will be rain in the Northwest US and rain along the mid-Atlantic coast into New England. So wherever you plans take you for this Thanksgiving, you should not have any serious travel problems.
Trolling out into far reaches of forecast-dom (voodoo land as James Spann calls it), it looks like our next really big shot at rain will come around November 29th. And if the GFS is right we could see some major cold around the first of December. We’ll try to watch that trend to see if it pans out.
Relatively quiet day at my house. Getting ready to head out for Thanksgiving like many folks plus got another rehearsal for the Christmas play at Helena United Methodist. You can check it out at https://www.helenaumc.org and click on Pageant Preview in the right column. The kids are working very hard to make this a meaningful Christmas story.
See you tomorrow morning with the next Weather Xtreme Video.
