RADAR CHECK: A band of showers and storms has formed along the surface front that bisects Alabama at mid-afternoon. The showers are along and south of U.S. 80 (Demopolis to Selma to Montgomery to Opelika), and they are moving south. The northern half of the state is partly to mostly sunny; temperatures are only in the low 80s over the Tennessee Valley, but closer to 90 down along the I-20 corridor.

COOL AIR BLOWS IN TONIGHT: We will begin the weekend with temperatures in the cool 50s early tomorrow, and a good chance some of the colder pockets will reach the upper 40s for the first time since last spring. The last time Birmingham dropped below 60 degrees was on May 25, when the low was 51.

The weekend will feature delightful weather. Sunny pleasant days, clear cool nights, and low humidity. The high tomorrow will be in the low 80s (some places north of Birmingham won’t make it out of the 70s), and we reach the mid 80s Sunday.

NEXT WEEK: The week looks generally quiet. A few showers are possible by Wednesday and Thursday, but the rain doesn’t look especially widespread or heavy. See the Weather Xtreme video for the details.

TROPICS: As expected, the tropical depression in the Bay of Campeche is now Tropical Storm Ingrid. It will make landfall on the Mexican Gulf Coast south of Brownsville, TX late in the weekend; it could bring very heavy rain and life threatening flooding to Northeast Mexico; the southern tip of Texas could have some flooding issues as well by Monday.

Tropical Depression Gabrielle is east of Cape Cod and headed for the Canadian maritimes, and Humberto is now a tropical storm in the middle of the Atlantic; it will stay in the middle of nowhere for days and it should ultimately fizzle out; no threat to land.

AT THE BEACH: A brief shower or storm is possible this evening along the cold front, otherwise fantastic weather from Panama City to Gulf Shores through early next week with mostly sunny days and fair nights. Highs in the 80s; the sea water temperature this morning at the Dauphin Island Sea Lab is 85 degrees.

FOOTBALL WEATHER: What a great night for high school football; the sky will be clear tonight. Kickoff temperature near 75 degrees, then falling into the 60s by halftime. Some stadiums might even be in the upper 50s by the final whistle.

For fans traveling to College Station, Texas for Alabama’s game against Texas A&M tomorrow (2:30p CT kickoff), you don’t need to bring jackets or sweaters. The sky will be partly sunny with a kickoff temperature near 94 degrees… falling back into the upper 80s by the final whistle. A few isolated showers or storms are possible near the game site, but the rain won’t be widespread.

For Auburn’s home game against Mississippi State (6:00p CT kickoff), the sky will be clear… the temperature close to 79 degrees at kickoff, then reaching the 60s by the fourth quarter. Much more comfortable than the past two weeks at Jordan Hare Stadium.

WEATHER BRAINS: Don’t forget you can listen to our weekly 90 minute netcast anytime on the web, or on iTunes. This is the show all about weather featuring many familiar voices, including our meteorologists here at ABC 33/40.
