DIFFERENT KIND OF DAY: Yesterday’s high in Birmingham was 91; today we are only at 67 degrees at 2:00 with clouds and a cool northerly breeze averaging 14 mph. The sky is overcast over most of North Alabama, and the cold front is nearing Dothan now.

Cool weather will headline the forecast through tomorrow; often clouds can hang tough longer than you think in this kind of situation, but we will forecast some clearing tonight, with intervals of sunshine possible tomorrow, mainly over West Alabama. The eastern counties could remain cloudy all day tomorrow with highs only in the 60s, but 70s are likely to the west where the sky should be brighter. Despite the clouds, the chance of any really significant rain looks very small for the next 48 hours.

OUR WEEKEND: We will forecast a slow warming trend, with a high in the 78-81 degree range Saturday, followed by low 80s Sunday. Both days will feature a mix of sun and clouds, although the sky could be mostly cloudy over East Alabama Saturday due to the good ole wedge.

FOOTBALL WEATHER: For the high school games tonight and tomorrow night, the sky should be mostly fair, with temperatures in the low 70s at kickoff, falling into the 60s by the second half.

Alabama will host North Texas Saturday night in Tuscaloosa (6:30 p.m. kickoff)… the sky will be mostly fair with a kickoff temperature near 78 degrees. Temperatures will drop into the 60s by the fourth quarter with a light north breeze. Auburn is on the road; they will be at Clemson Saturday for a game that kicks off at 11:00 CDT (on ABC 33/40 TV). The sky will be mostly cloudy with a small risk of some light rain. The temperature will rise from near 68 at kickoff into the low 70s by the final whistle. UAB will host Tulane at Legion Field Saturday at 3:00 p.m… the sky will be partly sunny at kickoff with a temperature close to 80 degrees, falling to near 70 by the end of the game. No significant chance of rain.

NEXT WEEK: Temperatures return to the 80s along with higher humidity levels. We could see a few scattered showers by Tuesday and Wednesday, but for now it doesn’t look like anything really heavy or widespread. See the Weather Xtreme video for more long range ideas.

TROPICS: Tropical Storm Maria could become a minimal hurricane for a day or two as it moves toward the Canadian Maritimes and the North Atlantic. No threat to the U.S., of course, and the rest of the Atlantic basin is quiet.
