After the light rain cleared out of Alabama yesterday morning, the weather was quite nice. So was the football. Great showing for Alabama and Auburn, and the FSU Seminoles had their way with Clemson. Go Noles! What if the National Championship were to come down to Florida State and Alabama? Probably best to stick to forecasting the weather.

And it looks like a great day for just about any outdoor activity you want to do like the racing at Talladega today. Look for the afternoon highs to be in the upper 60s with plenty of sunshine. We are starting off the day on the chilly side with some locations in Northeast Alabama dropping into the 30s. Some fog is also being reported across the northern third of Alabama but that should burn off quickly after sunrise.

After a warm start to the month, temperatures have really taken a down turn as we see the long wave trough position setting up over the eastern half of the country. The high of 70 at Birmingham yesterday was 4 degrees below the 30-year average of 74. And it looks like we are going to see below average temperatures for at least the next week and a little beyond.

With the upper trough and surface high pressure the Gulf should remain cut off so moisture is going to be pretty scarce for the next week. The only potential for any rain, and that would only be in the form of sprinkles, is a weak overrunning situation early Tuesday. The ECMWF is more aggressive than the GFS on this feature, and I’m tending to side with the GFS on less moisture and therefore less rain potential.

Not much change to our weather pattern as the upper trough remains in place for the upcoming week while a variety of short waves rotate through the trough. There is one strong one on Wednesday which will bring another reinforcing shot of cold air which will result in another morning with temperatures falling into the 30s. There is a good possibility of patchy frost with that shot of cold air. High temperatures will be mainly in the 60s for the coming week, however, that shot of cold air on Wednesday could be cold enough to hold highs in the upper 50s. Lows will be mainly in the 40s with widespread 30s on Thursday morning.

The tropics are quiet with nothing of any consequence to note.

Looks like we stay cool-ish until Halloween and then the GFS is suggesting a flattening of the overall pattern for the eastern half of the country which would mean a nice warm up for early November.
